How it works

Calculate your material requirement

Estimate gravel volume, cubic yards, and tons for driveways, paths, patios, and landscaping projects.

The formula

Cubic yards = length × width × (depth ÷ 12) ÷ 27. Estimated tons = cubic yards × material density.

Worked example

A 20 ft × 10 ft area at 3 in deep is 1.85 yd³ before waste. With 10% extra and a density of 1.4 tons/yd³, the order estimate is about 2.85 tons.

Before you order

  • Compacted base gravel is commonly ordered by weight.
  • Ask the supplier for the actual density of the product you selected.
  • Irregular areas can be divided into rectangles and added together.

Common questions

Gravel Calculator FAQ

How deep should gravel be?

Walkways often use 2–3 inches, while driveways commonly require multiple layers and greater total depth. Local soil and vehicle loads matter.

Why add extra material?

Spillage, compaction, uneven ground, and measurement error can increase the amount required. Ten percent is a common planning allowance.

How many tons are in a cubic yard of gravel?

Many gravels range from about 1.2 to 1.5 tons per cubic yard, but moisture, stone size, and supplier specifications change the result.
